Wichita, Kansas - Murder Most Foul

Murder is always heinous. Some, however, horrify us to the point of helpless rage. The following crime spree is a study in bestiality and racial hatred.

As near as can be determined, the sequence of events went like this:

On December 7, 2001, African American males Reginald and Jonathan Carr allegedly abducted Andrew Schreiber from a convenience store and drove him to an ATM, where they robbed and allegedly assaulted him.

A few days later, on December 11, the Carr brothers apparently accosted Ann Walenta, a cellist with the Wichita Symphony Orchestra, robbed her and shot her in the face. She was paralyzed from the waist down and later died in the hospital.

On December 15, the Carrs allegedly invaded a townhouse and kidnapped five young European Americans - three men and two women. The abductors took them to an ATM, then to an isolated soccer field. The two women were stripped and raped. The men and women were forced to engage in sex acts, after which they were made to kneel in the snow. Then, one at a time, they were shot in the back of the head, execution style.

One of the women survived and walked a mile, nude, in the snow to a house for help.

Jonathan and Reginald Carr were captured.

The city is reluctant to consider this a hate crime.

The following is only a sample of the EAIF correspondence relating to this series of murders.

OUR VIEW

It's understandable that the Sedgwick County district attorney's office is
being extra cautious about the quadruple murder committed last month in a Wichita soccer field. But a worried public needs and deserves more
information about the crimes.

It's understandable that the Sedgwick County district attorney's office is
being extra cautious about the quadruple murder committed last month in a Wichita soccer field.

But a worried public needs and deserves more information about the crimes.

The district attorney's office obtained a court order last week sealing
evidence related to the abduction and execution-style killing of four
Wichitans. The order prevents the public -- including the media -- from viewing documents such as reports by police and the Sedgwick County Emergency Medical Service.

The reasons for this unusual restriction, Deputy District Attorney Kim Parker said, are to help ensure a fair trial and to protect the victims' privacy. But while these may be admirable concerns, they don't justify a near blackout on official statements, verbal and written, about this case.

The horrific nature of the crimes has raised fears and questions among many Wichitans. But due to the lack of information, many citizens are still
searching for answers, and rumors -- some of which are likely worse than the truth -- are running rampant.

Wichitans are wondering, for example, whether police and prosecutors think that the crimes were purely random. Such information -- even if it is in very general terms -- would make a difference in how people feel about their safety.

Similarly, how did the perpetrators enter the house? Is there evidence of
forced entry? Answers to these questions could also affect how people respond to the crimes -- and to their fellow citizens.

Police have now linked -- though they won't say how -- the suspects in the murders, Reginald and Jonathan Carr, to the shooting and subsequent death of cellist Ann Walenta. Is there any indication that they were involved in another crime last month in which a man was forced to withdraw money from an ATM and then
was released in a field?

What about reports that it took more than two hours for EMS to take one of the victims thought dead to the hospital? Why can't the public review EMS records to find out what happened?

The list of unanswered questions could go on and on.

Wichitans appreciate that prosecutors and police need to be careful in what they say or release, lest it jeopardize their case or violate rules about pretrial publicity. But by throwing a blanket over almost everything that is in any way related to the case, law-enforcement officials are leaving -- unnecessarily -- a
concerned public wondering and worrying in the dark. -- For the board, Phillip Brownlee

Dear Editors,

Please urge the FBI to become involved in the Carr Brother killings of 12/15 and the now connected 12/11/00 killing of Ann Walenta, Symphony Cellist, who has died from a gunshot wound to the face. It is our understanding that another European American man was kidnapped by the same brothers but escaped
unharmed.

These are not random attacks. These are racially motivated hate crimes
targeting European Americans. Many indicators point to it being a hate
crime. Of course the different races of the suspects and victims is most
important, but the excessive force used to complete a robbery is the glaring indicator that the robbery was more than just a robbery. Shooting people execution style is not part of an element of a robbery--when it happens it is obviously more about racial hate than money.

We understand that Wichita does not want to be named a hate crime city--but we must stop hiding these kinds of cases. We believe the New Black Panther Party, headed by Khalid Muhammad an ex-Nation of Islam official, and his hateful rhetoric is being heard all over American. He has urged the killing of white people. There are current murders of European American people occurring in many cities of American by similar gangs of young non-European American men. We believe his rhetoric is connected to these killings.

Thank you.
