Melanie Bowers--Athens Middle School Cathryn Khalil In a message dated 4/10/08 9:01:46 AM, ckhalil@kltv.com writes: "Also, two girls and one boy were involved. One young man came up and took her sign from her and threw it away. Two other girls were put in ISS for not telling the teacher that the boy had thrown the sign away. Melanie’s parents agreed with the charges against her and apologized to the school and Dr. Hayes."
Sorry Cathryn, But you miss the point. Melanie Bowers was exercising her US Constitutional rights of free speech, and in a place (Public School) that is protected by Federal civil rights laws. This case is all about a couple of Hispanic kids who decided to deny her civil right of freedom of speech on Federally protected property and to take Melanies property--some call that a crime. But I guess, in your obviously biased world, that is OK. Not with me and fair minded Americans. At the very least it is petty theft, or the taking property from the person of another rises to the level of grand theft. A conspiracy and possible hate crimes may also have been committed by the Hispanic students. Certainly her US Constitutional rights of free speech and to be protected from racially/ethnicly motivated acts appear to be being denied by Athens Independent School Distict. I am shocked that the US Department of Justice, Criminal and Civil Rights Division and the FBI have not become directly involved in this Federal violations case. Where is the ACLU in this case? I am not dismissing the stupid exaggrations that Melanie spouted. That of course was wrong and I am not forgetting it--however, you obviously are not able to recognize that the Hispanic kids committed a crime(s) and started the whole episode by taking her sign and destroying it. The parents of Melanie should be ashamed of them selves for failing to
recognize what happened to start the incident. Louis Calabro, eaifpresemiritus@aol.com (650) 312-8284
